NAUSET
NEWCOMERS BOARD MEETING – September 1, 2004 Hosted by Richard and Flora Hall President Nancianne Kilpatrick called the meeting to order at 4:05 p.m. Nancianne welcomed the officers and committee members and thanked the Halls for the use of their home. Jo and Jerry Miller were elected to the Hospitality Committee. Nancianne outlined the September 8th general meeting as having a “coffee hour” format with introductions of officers and committee members. There will be no intermission, and the raffle will be held at the end of the meeting. She also mentioned that the Bike Committee will set up a table. Vice President Randy Miller asked everyone present to inform an officer of possible absences or schedule difficulties. Secretary Betty Ann Brown: no report.
Treasurer Ron Mador stated that due to early receipt of dues, the treasury
was in good shape with a balance on August 31st of $9,881. Delayed
charity payments will occur next week. The charities receiving funds from Nauset
Newcomers are as follow: Committee Reports: Group Activities: Bob and Sandy McLucky stated there are forty-three activities with sixty-one volunteer coordinators. There was some discussion concerning book groups, and it was decided to see if they are suggested on the new activities list due to a need for leadership. Social Events:
Programs: No September program, just a short talk about what is coming up. Publicity: Nauset Newcomers needs better visibility with possible better exposure through newspaper coverage. Membership: Mary Mador reports there are 720 paid members as of 9/1/04. This is similar to last year’s figure. Hospitality: Hospitality asks for food donations from all committee members for the 9/8 meeting. There will be a sign-up sheet for the October meeting. Raffle: All prizes for all meetings have been set. The committee will emphasize that the certificates should be used, traded, or passed back for reuse. The committee will have a coordination meeting on September 3rd. Webmaster: Don Ouellette says he still needs some pictures of committee members. Dine Out: No September Dine-Out. October Dine-Out will be at the Whitman House in North Truro. Old Business: Ron Mador investigated insurance questions raised at the last meeting. His conclusions were as follow: 1. An umbrella policy adding an additional one million dollars coverage to the general liability policy would cost $750.00 per year. 2. Addition of one million dollar coverage to the general policy for D and O coverage would be $450-500.00.
New Business:
Sarah Robinson will chair the Nominating Committee (skrobinson@comcast.net).

SECRETARY Betty Ann Brown announced that she has been sending reports via E-mail and to inform her if you are not receiving them. Home of Barbara Williamson PRESIDENT Nancianne Kilpatrick called the meeting to order at 4:02 p.m. She noted that the golf outing was great and the Wash Ashore party went well too. She also pointed out that the Newcomers will be involved with the Toys for Tots in December. VICE PRESIDENT Randy Miller said the suggestion box produced several comments. The first was that speakers should be more aware of adjusting the microphone, and that the suggestion box needed paper available. He also stated that only one hat had sold at the general meeting and he hoped more would sell at the next meeting. They would make a good Christmas present. TREASURER Ron Mador said the treasury is
still in good shape with a COMMITTEE REPORTS: Social Events: There are 176 people signed up for the Christmas party, with a capacity of 204. The Wash Ashore party had 111 attend, and all agreed that it was a successful event. The Jan. brunch reservations are going well, and the spring Boston trip has had much interest. Plans are underway for a Feb. Fling - Freddy and the Maybellines at the Eastham Elks Hall, Wed. the 23rd, 7-11:00, $28. per person. The Newport trip is now a waiting list only. Programs: The log program is Legacy
Financial Advisers- Estate Planning. Publicity: PR releases have been sent
to the Cape Cod Times and the Cape Codder. Also, Comcast has been notified of
meeting times. Gayle Adams, Membership: Mary Mador reports that there are currently 929 paid members. Hospitality: Debbie Owen reports that all is going well with the hospitality committee. Raffle: The Oct. raffle took in less than usual- $500. Hopefully things will be better next month. WEBMASTER Don Ouellette says all is
updated and that there have been 627 DINE OUT: Dine Out is at the Old Yarmouth Inn this month. NO OLD BUSINESS NEW BUSINESS: Randy Miller stated the
Wash Ashore party had gone well and that the nominating committee got some ideas
for nominations at the party. Bob McLuckie stated that there is a problem with
the coffee tables being too heavy. There will be a price quote for replacing
them at the next board meeting. Richard Dill suggested making a team for
volunteer activities that would work for non-profit organizations one day a

PRESIDENT Nancianne Kilpatrick called the meeting to order at 4:06 p.m. and immediately passed the baton to Vice President Randy Miller. VICE PRESIDENT Randy Miller stated that the singles group associated with Nauset Newcomers wants mention and sponsorship. It was suggested that they have a representative introduce the group at the general meeting. Sandy McLuckie volunteered to contact them. TREASURER Ron Mador stated that the balance as of 11/30/04 is $20,143. Due to an upcoming vacation, Ron suggested contacting him if you need a check between 1/18/05 and 2/18/05. COMMITTEE REPORTS Group Activities: Bob McLuckie stated that the NN Walking Group was mentioned in the Friday Cape Codder. There was also a picture of the Kayaking Group in the Sun Cape Cod Times. He was also informed that Gallery Hopping has 50 signed up but can only handle 25. The Nurses Group is looking for new members. There will be a sign up sheet at the general meeting. The Mah Jongg beginners group and the Day Trippers group are full. The Garden Group will not meet until March. Garden Calendars can be picked up in the lobby. Dog Walking and Guided Meditation are both suspended until spring. Ruth Bournazian who coordinates the Womens Issues groups emailed to say the six groups are full for the year. Social Events: The Christmas party still has a few openings, and the Jan. brunch still has 25 spaces. The committee is still waiting for sign ups for the Feb. dance. The Boston trip in April is a go and the committee is hoping to fill the second bus. A third bus is probably not feasible. Plans are being made for a Pops trip on May 25 for a program called Hooray for Hollywood. Program: The short program this month will be Habitat for Humanity. Toys for the Toys for Tots program will also be collected. The long program will be the Nauset High School Chorus Christmas Performance. Raffle: The raffle in Nov. made $513. The account currently has a balance of $1,748. WEBMASTER: Don Ouellette stated that everything has been updated. OLD BUSINESS: Richard Dill has been gathering information on setting up a volunteer team to help non-profit organizations. An activity clipboard will be set up for the Dec. meeting. It was also suggested that a letter be sent to various organization including those that NN donated to. Richard will check any legal ramifications involved. NEW BUSINESS: Randy Miller stated that the clips on the clipboards are wearing out. New clipboards will cost $135.47 plus tax at Staples. The board approved the purchase. The next meeting of the board will be at the
home of Ron and Mary Mador.

VICE PRESIDENT Randy Miller brought the meeting to order at 4:02 p.m. He
announced that President Nancianne Kilpatrick is again ill, and the entire board
send their wishes for a speedy recovery. The last board
meeting will be a dinner on the first Wed. of June at the Miller’s house,
followed by a joint meeting of the old and new board on the following Wed. at
the home of Sara and Robbie Robinson
pending acceptance by
President Kilpatrick, Randy asked for any additions to last
month’s minutes and Debbie Owens suggested a change to the first two sentences
in the New Business section. Her change would say “ We discussed the possibility
of changing the by-laws to provide a larger pool of candidates for future Board
seats, allowing up to five years of active membership rather than the current
limit of four. Some Board members felt that there are sufficient candidates to
fill the Board slots and a change to the by laws is not necessary. Randy and Nancianne agreed to suggest to the Nominating Committee that they
target new members who joined 1 – 3 years ago by identifying them and
approaching them directly.” It was voted to change the minutes, but also agreed
not to take any other action at this time.
TREASURER Ron Mador stated that as of 2/28/05 the balance in the treasury was
$18,712, but outstanding bills will bring that balance down to $14,342 soon.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
GROUP ACTIVITIES: Bob McLuckie announced that Judy Keller will coordinate
a new activity named “The Bronx Group”. It is a group for people who were born,
grew up, or have lived in the Bronx, NY. The group
will start in the fall. The Canoeing and
Current Events clipboards will be put out through the May General Meeting in
hopes that someone will step forward to lead them. Chamber Music is being
deleted as of March.
SOCIAL EVENTS: There are still openings for the Boston Flower Show on
March 16. Next year’s Christmas Party will be at the Wequassett Inn on Dec. 15.
Due to the low turnout for the “February
Fling”, it was suggested that any
group party for next year should be earlier in the year in order to miss
vacation times. It was also suggested that any group party planned for next

PROGRAMS: The Short Program will be the Lower Cape Outreach Council and
the Long Program will be Norman Peyne’s “Irish Village”.
MEMBERSHIP: The present membership stands at 991.
PUBLICITY: Gayle Adams said a NN ad will appear in the Cape Cod Times
periodically.
HOSPITALITY: Everything is progressing well, but the Hospitality
Committee needs a few extra hands due to committee member vacations.
Phil and Bunny LeBoeuf, members of
last year’s committee, have graciously volunteered to lend a hand this month due
to committee members’ vacations. The board also discussed a suggestion stating
“no Styrofoam cups” from the suggestion box. The board decided no action would
be taken since any alternative would be too costly and/or impractical. At the
next general meeting, Randy will ask those using the suggestion box to please
sign their names to their request so that any questions can be discussed with
the person.
WEBMASTER: Don Ouellette has developed a new page with board nominee
names and pictures. Some pictures still need to be submitted.
The web page will be presented after the April meeting when the new board is
announced.
DINE OUT will be at 902 Main Street in March and at Pates in April.
The board sends their thanks to the Nominating Committee for setting up the
slate for next year’s officers and committees. It was suggested that a few extra
applications should be held as reserves in case vacancies
arise..

Home of John and Anna McGovern
VICE PRESIDENT Randy Miller called the meeting to order at 4:02 p.m. and thanked
the McGovern’s for their hospitality. Randy said that President Nancianne
Kilpatrick is home and hopefully will be able to attend some of the final NN
meetings. The June 1 Board meeting will be a dinner at the Miller’s house,
catered by Phoenicia, with a cost of $10. per board member.. Board members will
be asked to bring hors d’oeuvres and desserts. The June 8 Joint Board meeting
will be at the home of Robbie and Sara Robinson and the issue of food will be
discussed at the next Board meeting. Nauset Newcomers will supply beverages for
each meeting. Randy also pointed out that we still have 29 hats, 32 golf shirts,
and 18 tee shirts to sell, and also suggested considering travel mugs and/or
coffee mugs as an item for next year.
SECRETARY Betty Ann Brown gave the Treasurer’s report since the Madors are away.
Ron said that the current balance as of 3/31/05 is $18,554. with outstanding
commitments of $4,200. and thus giving an actual balance of $14,354. Insurance
needs to be paid in June. The Madors will be at the General meeting.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Group Activities: Sandy McLuckie gave the report this month. She said that
Chris Kenny and Orin Segal from the Golf Group Activity are planning a golf
event at the Captain’s Course on Tues., May 24. A flyer will be available at the
General meeting. The Biking season will begin on April 19. The schedule is
available at the Biking clipboard, on the NN Website, and by e-mail. Scheduled
rides will be every Tues. morning thru Dec. Contact John Fallender and Barry
worth if you have questions. Stan Brady has activated the Motorcycling group
activity. The committee is still looking for a leader for Canoeing and Current
Events. Debbie Owen has volunteered to help organize the Photography group
activity. Sharon Cobb will lead a new activity called Jig Saw Puzzle group
activity. And finally, Jack Child sent an e-mail concerning the Dostels ski
trip: Jack visited three inns as possible replacements for the Dostels location.
He has nominated Landgrove for the Feb. 26 to Mar. 3, 2006 trip. The highlights
of Landgrove are excellent meals, a warm congenial gathering place, NN will be
the only guests and the resident innkeeper has made a sincere effort to please
and welcome the NN group. The inn has easy access to Manchester and on premises
X/C ski trails. The cost would be $342. PPDO for five days, including meals.
This information will be announced at the April NN general meeting.
Social Events: As of 4/5/05 there were only two tickets left for the
April 27 trip to Phantom of the Opera. The trip to the Pops on May 26 still has
some tickets left. NN hopes to sell 134 tickets, thus filling three buses. To
date, 97 tickets have been sold.
Programs: The Long Program this month will be Elderhostel and the Short
Program will be Cape Cod Volunteers.
Membership: Presently there are 995 members of Nauset Newcomers. Dues are
not charged for those joining in April and May.
Hospitality: Debbie Owen stated that there are sufficient sign-ups for
the “goodies” for this month’s General Meeting. Randy Miller is ordering a new
coffee pot.
Raffle: The March raffle brought in $340. The donations for the next two
raffles are in place.
DINE OUT: The Dine Out for this month is at Pates.
NOMINATING COMMITTEE: The new board will be introduced at the April
General Meeting.
NO OLD BUSINESS
NEW BUSINESS: NN was approached by Lower Cape Outreach to participate in
their “Homeruns” fund raiser. There was general agreement on the board that we
should not become involved.
The next board meeting will be on May 4 at the home of Pat and John Gibson, 23
Sea Mist Dr., East Orleans. Directions will follow at a later date.

Home of Pat and John Gibson
VICE PRESIDENT Randy Miller started the meeting at 4:05 p.m. and expressed his
thanks to the Gibsons for their hospitality. Randy had spoken to President
Nancianne Kilpatrick and said her health is improving. We all wish her well.
Randy also pointed out that we still have 24 hats, 31 golf shirts, and 18 tee
shirts remaining to sell. Randy mentioned that the June 1 board get-together
will be at his house. The cost is $10. per person, the main course and beverages
are supplied, and donations of hors d’ouevres and desserts are greatly
appreciated. We will gather at 5:00 p.m. Please bring a chair. The June 8 joint
board meeting will be at Robbie and Sara Robinson’s house at 4:00 p.m. for old
board members and 5:00 p.m. for new board members. We ask old board members to
bring DOUBLE desserts or hors d’ouevres or both. Directions to the Robinsons’
house are coming shortly.
TREASURER Ron Mador said the balance as of 5/4/05 is $14,686. However, the
insurance bill will be paid shortly.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
GROUP ACTIVITIES: The NN Photography Club met on 4/18/05 and decided to
concentrate on digital photography and how best to use the features of their
cameras and computers. The group agreed to monthly meetings on Tuesdays and
would be a combination of afternoon and evening meetings. Afternoon meetings will
include going together to particular sites to shoot pictures, and the evening
meetings will include discussing the various cameras and critiquing each other’s
work. Please think about
signing up.
Next year’s Bethel Ski Trip will be Sunday Feb. 5 through Friday Feb. 10. “The
Bronx “ group will hold their first meeting in September. The board voted to
discontinue the Fishing, Current Affairs, and Canoeing groups due to lack of
leadership, but hope some interest in these groups will emerge again in the
fall. Don’t forget the Gardening committee is having their plant sale at the
next general meeting. Bob and Sandy McLuckie expressed their thanks for a great
year and have contacted all Group Leaders to be sure they will continue next
year. They said most will continue or have chosen a group member to take over.
SOCIAL EVENTS: The Phantom of the Opera trip was a success, and 96 people
have signed up to go to the Pops.
PROGRAMS: Peter Earle from the Academy, along with an assistant, will
present a medley of songs for the Long Program. There is no Short Program this
month.
PUBLICITY: NN notices will be in the paper and on Comcast, usually in the
Events or Club News sections.
MEMBERSHIP: The NN currently has 1004 members.
RAFFLE: The raffle took in $440. in April, and all raffle prizes are set
for May.
DINE OUT: Dine Out is at the Academy Grill this month.
NOMINATING COMMITTEE: The elections will be at the general meeting. We
will need 150 active members for a quorum. VP Randy Miller will try to attend
each transition meeting for new committees. Please inform him of any dates.
OLD BUSINESS: The board voted to purchase two tables for use in the
lobby. R. Dill will purchase the tables for use in the fall.
NO NEW BUSINESS
We had a short discussion about how to get on the list to receive a donation
from NN. Each charity needs to submit a letter stating that they are non-profit
and explain the need for the funds. The executive board makes the decision about
which charities to support. There will be a preliminary meeting on May 11 and
the final decisions will be made in June.
