Nauset Newcomer History

1977-1978

Nauset Newcomers was organized in 1977. Martha Vaughn was first President. Cost:  $7/couple, $5/single.

The club grew to approximately 100 members within the year.
The general meetings were moved from people’s homes to Lo Cicero’s.
There were three activities – Bridge, Bowling and Swimming.

In the second year they moved the meetings to the Inn of the Yankee Fishermen (Now known as the Orleans Inn). The number of Activities grew with the addition of Arts & Crafts, Biking and Gourmet Dining (Dining In).  Many earlier groups are still in place ...  if you call your group “gourmet dining”, you may be dating yourself.

1982-1983

Membership increased to 184.  Up 84 members in 5 years (+84%).
The meeting moved to the Masonic Hall, Main Street, Orleans.

1987-1988 (Tenth Anniversary) 

Membership increased to 318.  Up 134 members in 5 years (+73%).
The number of activities grew to eleven with the additions of Golfing, Ballroom Dancing, Painting, Dining Out Singles and Basic Investing. 

1992-1993 (Fifteen Anniversary)

Membership increased to 586.  Up 268 members in 5 years (+84%).
Meetings were moved to the  Elks Hall, Route 6, Eastham.  Fourteen activities – Added Dining Out Doubles, Canoeing, Book Group, Ice Skating, Fishing, Financial Planning, Gardening, Genealogy & Computing and Dancercise.

 1997-1998 (Twentieth Anniversary) 

Membership increased to 903.  Up 317 members in 5 years (+54%).
Meetings are moved to the Wellfleet Cinema, Route 6, Wellfleet.
the number of activities continue to expand with the addition of  Armchair Travel, Birding, RV Travel, Square Dancing, Needlework, Scrabble, Mah Jongg, Cooking and Day Trips.

2002-2003 (Twenty-Fifth Anniversary) 

Membership increased to 1076.  Up 173 members in 5 years (+19%).
General meeting continue to be held at the Wellfleet Cinema, Route 6, Wellfleet.  The number of activities has grown to thirty eight and now include T'ai Chi, Women’s Issues, Yoga, Ski trips, Poker, Painting, Chickenfoot, Cribbage, Photography, Scuba Diving, Motor Cycling  and Needlecraft.

By-Laws were updated in 2002 allowing 10% of the total members to be outside the four town nucleus (Wellfleet, Eastham, Orleans and Brewster).  Also, the definition of active members was changed to mean those persons who have been members four years or less.

Cost:  $20/couple and $10/single.

2003-2004

Annual dues increased to $15 per person.
