NAUSET NEWCOMERS GENERAL MEETING – September 11, 2002 (Approved)
 

Wellfleet Cinema, Route 6, Wellfleet

President, Jan Carlson (in her white hard hat), welcomed everyone to the 25th year of Nauset Newcomers.  She said there will be a celebration at the end of the year.

Bruce Abbott  offered a fitting tribute to the victims of September 11th with his saxophone.

George Dunn, (past president), thanked everyone for their conduct when the roof was falling last May.  He thanked the many many folks who helped behind the scenes of Nauset Newcomers. 

Jan introduced Charlie Carlson and proceeded with announcements. 

Joe Borge told of the web site and the suggestion box.

Bob Harding passed clipboards for next month’s food.

Jim Roberts gave the treasurer’s report.

Al Alfano said the directory would be available at the October meeting.  If there are any changes, please send them to the website.

New Members from last May, mail in memberships, and today’s sign ups were recognized.

Dave Root said there are 30 spots left for the Sea Pines party. 

Pat Kelleher said the New Bedford trip is full.

The Oct. 24th Wash Ashore party will be for new people only.

Leslie Pike explained about the clipboards and how to sign up for group activities.  She said the canoe trips will be rescheduled.  Questions should go to individual activity leaders.

By-law changes were reviewed by Ken Selger.  These will be voted upon at the October meeting.  We will need 2/3 approval by active members.  The complete by-laws may be read on the website.

The Raffle was conducted.

NAUSET NEWCOMERS GENERAL MEETING – October  9, 2002 (Approved)

 President, Jan Carlson welcomed the group and gave the housekeeping announcements. 

Joe Borge and Kim Kassner gave short reviews.

Jim Roberts shared the good news that we have over $15,000 in our account.

The membership team welcomed new members and gave each one an opportunity to tell us a bit about them. 

The Social Events committee reported that the New Bedford trip was a go.  The Wash Ashore party is filling up and should be fun.  The Holiday Dinner Dance will be December 18th.  On November 21st there will be a first ever Country and Western Night.

Florence Green reported that the program for November will be about health care and the Council on Aging.

Leslie Pike said that there are three new groups: Current Events, Women’s Poker, and Word Games that are just getting underway.

Daytrippers has 60 folks interested and needs leaders.

There will be a 10-week beginners bridge class available for $90.  It will be given by Willard Salter whose telephone number is 255-4615.

Jack Childs said that the Dostals Ski Trip is January 19 thru 24.  The Bethel trip is February 9th.

Another new group is one in conversational French.

25th Anniversary Fact:  In 1977 dues were $7 per couple and $5 per single.

Tom Finan reported that the celebration will probably be a clambake on May 14, 2003.

Suggestions are welcome.

Don Ouellette reported on the website.  There is the ability to sign up for activities there as well as a list of groups, etc.  Suggestions are welcome.

There was a quorum in attendance.  The motion to amend the bylaws was made by Joe Borge.  It was seconded and passed by unanimous voice vote.

Nancy Seavy introduced Virginia Duffy from Elder Services in Dennis who explained the services that are offered through this group to help over 300 children on Cape Cod with reading skills.  They are looking for volunteers.

After the break, the raffle was held.

When the projector finally arrived Roger Everett gave a wonderful talk with slides about birding on Cape Cod and what we could expect to see at this time of year.  His photos were spectacular and his dialog was interesting as well as humorous.

NAUSET NEWCOMERS GENERAL MEETING – November 13, 2002 (Approved)

Wellfleet Cinema, Route 6, Wellfleet

President:  Jan Carlson, called the meeting to order with a joke and the traditional thanks  at 9:35 a.m.

John Vincent, Manager of the Wellfleet Cinema and a member of the Marine Corps League talked about Toys for Tots and the toy drive we will support.  Please bring new and unwrapped toys to be distributed to the Lower Cape Outreach Council and the Salvation Army.  They would prefer toys to money, but will accept money.

Vice President: Joe Borge, urged folks to use the suggestion box.  He said if a person would like a response they need to provide their name and number.

Secretary: Kim Kassner, said the minutes were in the lobby for review.

Treasurer: Jim Roberts, gave his usual good news -- $9500 in bank!

Hospitality: Joan Harding, asked for food sign ups.

Dining Out:  Al Kouba, spoke of the Arbor for November, La Alouette in January, and The Mews in February.  There are hors d’ouevres cookbooks available for $12 each.

Membership: Al and Carmella Alfano said there are 969 paid members.

Social Events:

Dave Root, Pat Kelliher and Anne Kelliher spoke of the Country & Western night on November 21st.  There will be a Christmas Dinner Dance at Ocean Edge as well as a brunch and play in Orleans in January.

Publicity and Program:  Nancy Seavey and Florence Green said to fill in the front seats for the December Nauset High School Honors Chorus program.  They asked us not to leave at intermission as the Healthcare of Cape Cod folks have information for us

Group Activities:  Leslie Pike said the Women’s Issues has filled 3 groups.  There is a Women’s Poker Beginner’s group.  New groups are the Scuba Diving, the Motorcycling and the Married, But Might As Well Be Single. 

Jan Carlson said that 25 years ago when Nauset Newcomers began, there were three activity groups – bridge, bowling and swimming.

Tom Dewing said the 25th Anniversary celebration would be a clambake on May 16, 2003.  There will be sign up sheets in December.

Don Ouellette reported on three new pages on the web:  minutes of the meetings, 25th Anniversary information, and “Just for Fun”. 

Ron Morissette discussed the nominating committee.

Nancy Seavy introduced Ken Murray, the speaker for the Family Pantry.  He explained what they do, how they do it, and how we can help with time or money.

Intermission was followed by the raffle.

Florence Green introduced Peter Dubay from Cape Cod Health Care Foundation.  He introduced others from the group and showed slides pertaining to the demographics and growth plans for Cape Cod Health Care.  With 4400 employees, Cape Cod Health Care is the Cape’s largest employer.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:50 a.m.

NAUSET NEWCOMERS GENERAL MEETING – December 11, 2002 (approved)

The meeting began with the presentation of colors and the singing of God Bless America by George Dunn.  The Marine Honor Guard accepted Toys for Tots throughout the meeting.

Jan Carlson, President, welcomed everyone at 9:40 a.m. and gave the usual housekeeping announcement.

Joe Borge, Vice President, reminded folks of the suggestion box and the Volunteer Handbooks available in the lobby.  He announced that the matinee movies would be available after the meetings in Jan., Feb., and March.  The cost will be the senior discount and hot dogs will be for sale too.

Kim Kassner, Secretary. said the minutes are in the lobby for review.

Jim Roberts, Treasurer, announced that we have over $19,000 in the bank at this time.

Bob Harding, of the Hospitality Committee thanked people who donated food for the meeting.

Al Kouba, of Dining Out gave the upcoming schedule:

Al also said there were a few cookbooks left at $12 each.

Al and Carmella Alfano, of Membership said we have 993 members.  All corrections for the membership supplement are due in January.  Al explained that the red badges are for returning members, green for the first year of new membership, and blue is optional for singles.

Fran Green, of Programs said the January meeting will feature Paul Morrow on Financial Planning. 

Jan Carlson’s history note was that 25 years ago Nauset Newcomers offered only 3 activities – arts and crafts, biking, and gourmet dining.

Tom Finan announced that the 25th Anniversary party will be May 16, 2003 at the Cape Cod Sea Camps.  It will be a wonderful clambake!

Leslie Pike said there are three new groups – 2 meditation groups and a duplicate bridge group.

The Daytrippers will be going to Cape Cod Symphony on February 16th

The Dostels ski trip and the Bethel ski trip were discussed.

Don Ouellette, Webmaster, announced website updates.

Pat Eggars, Nominating Committee, urged people to sign up for fun experience!!!

Florence Green introduced Larry Marzlin of the Lower Cape Outreach Council.  He explained the needs of people on the Cape and the various ways they are helped by the Lower Cape Outreach Council.  He offered several ways for us to help.

Many great items were raffled off to the delight and disappointment of many!

Nancy Seavey introduced the Nauset High Honors Chorus led by Alison Beaven.  They gave us a wonderful and truly inspiring musical interlude. 

We applauded and thanked the chorus and adjourned the meeting.

NAUSET NEWCOMERS GENERAL MEETING – January 8, 2003 (approved)

Wellfleet Cinema, Route 6, Wellfleet

The meeting was called to order by President, Jan Carlson, at 9:30.  There were 172 people in attendance.  Jan welcomed everyone and gave the usual housekeeping announcements.  She reminded people that is there were no meeting due to weather, please check the website for announcements.

Joe Borge, Vice President, said there will be no Boston theater package due to costs.

There will be movies following the meeting today.  Lunch of hot dog, chips and soft drink will be available for $3.00.

The minutes from December’s meeting were available for review in the lobby.

Jim Roberts, Treasurer, was thanked by Jan Carlson for his hard work.  Currently our total cash balance is $17,922.16.

Hospitality thanked people for their donations and passed the clipboard for next month’s sign ups.

Al Kouba, Dining Out, said we will be at the Mews in Provincetown in February, The Penguin in Hyannis in March, and The Chatham Wayside Inn in April.

Membership is 1010 to date.

The president thanked Nancy Seavey and Florence Green for all their work to plan the monthly meetings.  Today’s program was Paul Mauro with financial advice.  Next month we will hear about Elderhostel.

Group Activities:
Dostals ski trip still has room.  You will need to call the Bethel Inn to reserve.

This month’s piece of history is that on its 5th Anniversary, Nauset Newcomers had increased to 184 members – and increase of 73% in five years.  They then moved their meetings to the Masonic Hall in Orleans.

Tom Finan reminded folks of the 25th Anniversary party on May 16th at the Cape Cod Sea Camps.  There is room for 325 people.  200 are already signed up.

Don Ouellette, Webmaster, reminded people to keep looking at the website.  It is always changing.  There is now a gallery to show photos of members enjoying events.  President, Jan Carlson, explained that Ken Selger set up the website last year and then handed it over to Don.  In Nauset Newcomers fashion, Don took a good thing and made it better, and it just keeps growing.

The Nominating Committee reported that recruitment for next year has been successful.

The Volunteer Speaker was Cheryl Osimo from Silent Spring.

Following Intermission, the raffle was conducted by Tom Reilly, Mary Nardini, Charlie Carlson and Joe Borge.

Paul Mauro spoke about financial planning.  For everyone who filled out a form for him, a name was to be drawn to win a 13” TV.  Everyone waited in the lobby after the meeting for the drawing.  Tom Reilly drew the winning name.

After Paul finished speaking a move was made to adjourn and the meeting ended.

NAUSET NEWCOMERS GENERAL MEETING – February 12, 2003 (approved)

The meeting was called to order by President, Jan Carlson, at 9:30.  There were 137 people in attendance.  Jan welcomed everyone and gave the usual housekeeping announcements.  She thanked the people who ran last month’s social events.  Jan announced that Bill Saint, who was on the board in 1998 and 1999 had just died in Chatham. 

Joe Borge, Vice President, brought our attention to the Volunteer Handbook that is available in the lobby.  He also reminded folks of the suggestion box, the February movies after the meeting and to please clean up our cups, etc.

The minutes from the January meeting were available in the lobby.

Jim Roberts, Treasurer, reported that we are in fine financial shape.  He thanked the project managers for their organization and for actually making the money.

Bob Harding from the Hospitality committee thanked people for the food donations.

Al Kouba, Dining Out Chairman, said that the Mews luncheon of February 18, 19, and 20 has a few openings.  The Penguin Sea Grille will be March 18, 19, and 20.  In April the restaurant will be the Chatham Wayside Inn on the 15, 16, and 17.  A new item on the reservation form will be a check off if you would like to sit with new people.  This is an experiment to see if folks like this system.

Al Alfano, Membership said we are currently at 1034 members.  New members were introduced.

Anne Kelleher, Social Events, said there are 18 seats left on the 4 buses chartered for the Boston Pops.

Evie Tighe said the Antiques Roadshow on March 27th has a few more openings.

Florence Green and Nancy Seavey, Publicity/Programs, said the March program will be Norman Paine with his Irish music.

Leslie Pike, Group Activities, explained the name change of the Ramblin Roses.  She also reported that 45 people were signed up for the Dostels ski trip.

The piece of history for the month is that between the 5th and 10th year, Nauset Newcomers grew 73% to a total of 315 members.

Kip Snow, 25th Anniversary Party, gave a very funny and fun report.  The party is May 16th at Cape Cod Sea Camps in Brewster.  They currently have 350 reservations and can only accommodate 335. 

Don Ouellette, Web Site, said there are photos of the Dostels trip on the web page.  There are also clipboards for activity sign ups, and photos of the board nominees on the site.

The nominating committee has completed their job.

The Volunteer Speaker was Helen Pluciennik who told about the Fresh Air Fund and what it has meant to her family.  She explained how to get involved. 

There was a plug from Larry Marzlin for the Lower Cape Outreach Council for a benefit performance of  “The Little Prince” by the Harwich Junior Theater.   He also told about a Walk for Hope on April 26th that anyone interested can join.

After intermission it was raffle time with Tom Reilly, Mary Nardini, Joe Borge and Charlie Carlson delivering the goods.

The January minutes were approved.

Florence Green introduced Peg Rasmussen of Elder Hostel who gave a slide show and talk about the places she has been and the opportunities available through Elder Hostel.  Many members signed up afterwards to receive brochures about the trips.

The meeting was adjourned at 11:35 a.m.

NAUSET NEWCOMERS GENERAL MEETING – March 12, 2003 (Approved)

President, Jan Carlson, called the meeting to order at 9:30.  Jan welcomed everyone and gave the usual housekeeping announcements.  She thanked the organizers of the IMAX theater trip as well as the Mews dinner evenings.  Good new!  Jan told us that chocolate has GOOD cholesterol so we should eat lots!

Joe Borge, Vice President, brought our attention to the Suggestion Box, the Volunteer Handbook, and the February movies.

Kim Kassner, Secretary, reminded folks that the minutes were in the lobby for review.

Treasurer, Jim Roberts said we have over $84,000 in our treasury.

Betsey Richards was the only member of the Hospitality Committee at the meeting.  She thanked all who helped her carry on with goodies at the meeting.

Al Kouba for Dining Out said the Penguin dinner is next week.  The Chatham Wayside Inn is April 15,16, and 17.

Al and Carmella Alfano introduced new members.  The membership is at 1038.

Social Events:

Anne Kelleher told about the Heritage Plantation tour with lunch at The Daniel Webster Inn.

Evie Tighe said the Antiques Road Show has just a few openings.

The Pops night has one seat left on the 5:30 bus.

Florence Green, Publicity/Program chairwoman said the April meeting will be a talk about turtles by MA. Audubon.

Leslie Pike, Group Activities said there is a new women’s bridge group.  On 4/29 there will be a golf outing at Hyannis.  5/15 golf will be at The Captain’s in Brewster.  As the weather improves the following groups are coming back

This month’s Piece of History is that at the 15th Anniversary, Nauset Newcomers had 586 members and had to move their meeting place to Eastham to accommodate the group.

The 25th Anniversary Committee is promising the largest event ever sponsored by Nauset Newcomers.  There are 357 spaces and 405 signed up.  There will be 14 past presidents at the event.  Glenn Ritt of “The Cape Codder” has promised to do great publicity.  The raffle committee is gathering door prizes to enhance the evening.

Web Site is very active according to Don Ouellette.

Nominating Committee is finished.  Candidates will be introduced in April.

The Volunteer Speaker was Janice Perrin (with help from Dick Kilmer), who gave us great information about the Big Brother/Big Sister program.  They made it sound fun, rewarding and easy.

Following intermission,  the minutes were approved and the raffle committee gave away great stuff.

Norman Peyne entertained the group with lively and fun Irish and American songs.

NAUSET NEWCOMERS GENERAL MEETING – April 9, 2003 (Approved)

President, Jan Carlson, called the meeting to order at 9:30.  Jan welcomed everyone and gave the usual housekeeping announcements.  She remarked that it was not even snowing today!  The Antique Road Show was a success thanks to John and Evie Tighe.  Dinner at The Penguin was reportedly good.  There will be no more movies until next year.

Jan, sitting in for Joe Borge, Vice President, who was away, reported 219 newcomers at the meeting.  She reminded us to clean up, etc.

Kim Kassner, Secretary said the March minutes are in the lobby for review.

Jim Roberts, Treasurer, reported $92,500 in the treasury.

Hospitality spokesperson, Dave Maynard, requested lots of food for the large May meeting.

Pat Eggars spoke for Dining Out.  The dinner at The Chatham Wayside Inn will be April 15,16, and 17.  That is the last event for the year due to the clambake.

Al Alfano, Membership, said we have 1056 members at this time.Pam Root, Social Events, said the Pops, May 22nd is sold out.  Heritage Plantation, April 24th has a few spaces.

Florence Green, Publicity/Programs said Bob Prescott of the Mass. Audubon will be our speaker in May.  Nancy Seavey announced that the Day Trippers will have a Duck Tour on June 6th.  They told members to watch for the Cape Codder on April 18th where there will be an article about the Nauset Newcomers and the 25th Anniversary.

Leslie Pike, Group Activities, told of two new groups – running and a film lecture series put together by Ruth Twomley.  Astronomy, canoeing and golf are back for sign up.

This month’s piece of history is that between 15 and 20 years Nauset Newcomers membership increased 54%. 

The 25th Anniversary Bash Committee is ready to go!

Don Ouellette, Webmaster, said that the nominee page is activated.  There also is a page for the sponsors of the 25th Anniversary as well as the biking and canoeing schedules.

Ron Morrissette, Nominating Committee introduced the new board to a big round of applause.

May 14th there will be a plant sale courtesy of the Nauset Newcomers Garden Club.

Beverly Costa-Ciavolla spoke on behalf of Independence House.  She provided much information and ways to volunteer.

After intermission, the minutes for March were approved.

The Raffle committee gave away all the goodies for the month.

Florence Green introduced the folks from The Academy of Performing Arts who provided a very fine musical program.

The meeting was adjourned at 11.40 a.m.

NAUSET NEWCOMERS GENERAL MEETING – May 14, 2003 (Approved)

President, Jan Carlson, called the meeting to order at 9:35.  Jan welcomed everyone and gave the usual housekeeping announcements.  She reminded everyone about the plant sale that was happening outside the theater.  There will not be any meetings until September.  Jan told us there would be an eclipse of the moon tomorrow night at 10 p.m.

Joe Borge, Vice President,  reminded folks of the suggestion box, the volunteer handbook and to clean up our coffee cups, etc.  There were 171 people in attendance.

Kim Kassner, Secretary,  said the minutes of the April meeting were in the lobby.

Jim Roberts, Treasurer, reported about $10,000 left in the treasury after the payment of this year’s bills.

Pat Galante spoke for hospitality and thanked everyone who donated food all year.

Al Kouba thanked his Dining Out committee for the great year.  Over 900 diners enjoyed the monthly outings at 6 different restaurants.

Al and Carmella Alfano said the membership count is currently 1076.  They introduced and welcome today’s new members.

Dave and Pam Root reminded folks of the upcoming trip to Heritage Plantation.  Evie Tighe said the Pops buses are full and ready for a fun evening.

Florence Green said today’s program will be her last.  It is, of course, Bob Prescott of the MA Audubon Society.

Leslie Pike, Group Activities mentioned several new groups that will begin next fall.  Mary Callahan gave information about the Daytrippers event in the Berkshires in October.  Pam Shinnick told about the Duck Tour on June 9th.

Tom Finan, 25th Anniversary Bash,  said 359 people will be at the clambake Friday.

Don Ouellette, Webmaster, reminded people of what is currently available on the web site.

Jan mentioned the “catch all” table with information in the lobby.  Jan thanked her husband, Charlie, for all his help and support this year.  (Much much applause!)

There was the presentation of the old board and a few meaningful remarks from Jan.

The new board was introduced by Ron Morrissette who suggested there be one ballot.  Kim Kassner, Secretary, made the motion.  It was seconded and the new board was voted in.

Florence Green introduced the Volunteer Speaker from the Girl Scouts who told us the history and importance of the Girl Scouts on Cape Cod.

After intermission, the minutes from April were approved and the raffle was held.

Bob Prescott of MA Audubon in Wellfleet gave a fun and informational program about the center and the birds and animals it deals with.  Slides and discussion were great.

The meeting was adjourned at 12:00.
